MRI Spectrometer Enclosure Design Case Study

This project involved the complete redesign of a pre-clinical MRI spectrometer enclosure to create a premium rack-mounted solution suitable for integration within a standard EIA 19-inch equipment cabinet. The existing product utilised a generic off-the-shelf enclosure that lacked the quality, functionality and visual identity my client wanted for their expanding range of imaging equipment.

Project Overview

Working closely with the client, I developed a bespoke enclosure system that combined high-quality industrial design with practical engineering, creating a distinctive product platform capable of housing current and future electronic hardware.

The Challenge

The objective extended well beyond repackaging the existing electronics. The client wanted to establish a recognisable design language for their product range by developing a family of custom rack enclosures with integrated cooling, modular PCB mounting and straightforward serviceability.

A key requirement was to create a visually distinctive front panel that would differentiate the product from conventional industrial equipment while remaining practical to manufacture in relatively low production volumes. Early concept development demonstrated that an illuminated front fascia offered the strongest visual impact, introducing the challenge of integrating a robust, premium-quality lighting solution within a heavy-duty enclosure. Beyond enhancing the product's visual identity, the multicoloured LED illumination was engineered to provide clear operational status indication, allowing users to quickly identify system states while reinforcing the premium appearance of the product.

Engineering & Development

The enclosure was engineered around a precision-machined, dark anodised aluminium front panel that became the structural centrepiece of the design. Rather than serving purely as an aesthetic feature, the panel performed multiple engineering functions, providing structural rigidity, mounting points for heavy-duty carrying handles, integration of the illuminated display elements and accommodation of a central control switch.

The main enclosure was constructed from folded sheet metal panels, engineered to assemble directly onto the front aluminium plate to create a rigid and durable housing suitable for demanding laboratory environments. The illuminated front panel utilised LED lighting coupled with a precision-machined clear acrylic light guide, producing a striking illuminated feature surrounding the central control button and extending across the width of the enclosure.

Throughout the project, careful consideration was given to manufacturability, assembly efficiency, thermal management, service access and long-term product durability while maintaining the premium appearance expected by the client.

Outcome

The completed spectrometer successfully transformed what had previously been a generic electronic enclosure into a distinctive, premium product that became an integral part of the client's visual identity. The illuminated front panel created a striking presence within equipment racks, immediately distinguishing the unit from surrounding instrumentation while reinforcing the quality of the underlying technology.

The design established a scalable enclosure platform that could be adapted across multiple products, supporting future development while delivering a robust, serviceable and highly recognisable solution. Customer feedback was extremely positive, with the spectrometer consistently attracting attention and helping to reinforce the client's reputation for innovation and quality.
