Pre-clinical MRI Engineering Case Study

This project involved the design and development of enclosure systems and supporting accessories for pre-clinical MRI technology. The initial brief was to create a suitable enclosure for a compact bench-top MRI magnet, providing both a functional housing solution and an industrial design platform that supported the continued development of the technology.

Project Overview

The success of the initial enclosure design contributed to further investment and growth, supporting the development of advanced high-field and cryogen-free superconducting magnet systems. As the technology evolved, my involvement expanded into the design of associated accessories, including solutions to support multi-modality imaging platforms incorporating PET and CT technologies.

The Challenge

Throughout the development programme, the MRI technology underwent significant evolution, progressing from early permanent magnet concepts to highly sophisticated compact superconducting systems. Each technological advancement introduced new engineering challenges, requiring the enclosure architecture to adapt while maintaining functionality, manufacturability and a consistent user experience.

The large-scale nature of the systems presented additional mechanical design challenges, particularly around the construction and installation of the GRP moulded enclosure panels. As the magnet systems increased in size and complexity, innovative methods were required to assemble, align and secure large covers around the magnet structure and supporting components.

Engineering & Development

The development process involved extensive iterative design, prototyping and on-site evaluation. Using a combination of rapid CNC machining, SLA, SLS and vacuum casting techniques, multiple prototype solutions were created and evaluated to refine both the enclosure systems and supporting accessories.

As the product range expanded, I contributed to the design and development of additional equipment including animal handling systems for pre-clinical imaging applications. These solutions addressed limitations identified with existing off-the-shelf products and evolved into more advanced mechanically automated systems incorporating robust mechanisms designed for reliable operation.

The projects required a highly practical engineering approach, involving hands-on prototype assembly, physical modifications, mechanical testing and collaboration with installation teams. I also visited multiple customer sites across Europe to assess installed systems, identify improvement opportunities and feed real-world experience back into the product development process.

Outcome

Through continued product development, engineering refinement and close collaboration with the wider team, the MRI platform evolved into a successful range of pre-clinical imaging systems. The combination of advanced magnet technology, robust enclosure design and application-specific accessories supported MR Solutions' growth into a recognised leader in MRI technology.

Many of the original enclosure concepts and design solutions continued to form the foundation of the product range as additional systems and capabilities were introduced.
